World of Warcraft is one of the most popular MMORPGs of all time and is still the currently the most-subscribed MMORPG; it even holds the Guinness World Record for the most popular MMORPG by subscriber count.
It was first released in 2004 and the game has been going strong for over 10 years now thanks to the various expansions it has received over the years; World of Warcraft is also a subscription based MMORPG with a large cash store in the game.
The MMORPG takes place in the fantasy Warcraft universe with a variety of races for the player to select from including Humans, Elven races, Pandaren and also Tauren. Along with races, there is also a variety of classes for the player to choose from which are made up of a mix of ranged, melee, healers and tanks. Each class is unique and brings something new to the game. Players can customize and name their characters, it is also possible to have different characters across several servers.
There are 4 types of servers and each one is a little bit different. The normal servers are PvE the gameplay is focused on completing quests however there is some optional PvP fights and roleplay is not expected on them. There are also PvP servers where open combat is normal and players can be attacked at any time, RP servers which are PvE with roleplay and also RP-PvP servers which is a variant of the PvP servers except these are also roleplaying orientated.
There are lots of role-playing elements in World of Warcraft for players to get involved with, even if they are not playing on a RP server. Players can choose to take on a profession from a wide range of jobs such as blacksmithing and mining; there are also secondary skills such as cooking and fishing which players can choose to learn.
World of Warcraft can be be played solo however some of the content is group orientated; most of the end-game content was designed with groups and guilds in mind which can be a little restricting for solo players. For social MMORPG players, World of Warcraft is great with lots of opportunities for group play however it might not be as fun for solo players. With the wide variety of servers, there’s a server for almost all types of players including roleplayers.
