Gowens is looking for a mmo with tons of endgame. His playstyle is listed as hardcore and has previously played Star Wars The Old Republic, RIFT, Lord Of The Rings Online, WoW, and Guild Wars 2.
Our first recommendation is Final Fantasy XIV. Since you mentioned you are looking for an MMO with tons of endgame then this fits the bill. The main end game content would be trials and dungeons.
Trials are encounters where adventurers group together to battle very powerful creatures. Each trial in FFXIV consists of a single boss fight. After you complete a trial then you are are rewarded with story progression, tokens, or some other rare item. There are some trials which require 4 players but a majority of them will need 8 people.
Dungeons in Final Fantasy XIV are done in instances. In order to unlock a dungeon you will need to complete a series of quests, a majority of them being part of the main storyline.
There are also level requirements. Players below the level requirement cannot enter the dungeon. Players above the level requirement are level synced to the maximum level permitted for the dungeon. There are currently about 14 endgame dungeons.
Similar to WoW you can set raid difficulty with Savage being the hardest, this is comparable to Heroic mode in WoW.
Our second recommendation would be Elder Scrolls Online. Since you mentioned you are looking for endgame content and didn’t specify raiding I wanted to recommend ESO.
This game has a unique feature called the the veteran system. When you hit max level, character progression doesn’t stop there. You start leveling your veteran levels and the higher you are the more content you unlock. Content includes veteran dungeons, zones, and trials. Veteran dungeons are the same dungeons you visited before hitting max level but include additional areas and quests. Veteran Zones, similar to veteran dungeons, are the normal zones you’ve already encountered but have a higher difficulty. Players are able to complete more quests, experience new storylines, obtain achievements, discover new locations and even more.
Trials are also interesting endgame content. Trials are only available to the highest level veterans and are optimized for groups of 12 players. They are essentially very large, difficult dungeons with a few twists. First of all in a Trial you get a limited number of resurrections, when all these resurrections are used the trial fails and is reset. If you want to continue the trial you must start all over. Each Trial has tough monsters and bosses but for those willing to challenge themselves you can try to complete the trial as quick as possible. This adds another element to the game known as Trial leaderboards which reward groups who complete the Trials faster than the rest.
Our final recommendation is Wildstar.
We think this would be a good fit because there are several endgame dungeons and world bosses. End game PvE content is challenging, exciting and will keep you busy for quite a while. End game is one of the main attractions of Wildstar. Unlike other MMO’s where the boss fights might be simple, there are instead a variety of movement and positioning mechanics that need to be utilized. This may require you to maintain a constant DPS rotation while keeping yourself alive and in most cases not killing anyone around you. The concept of telegraphs (or zones that can damage or heal you) also allows for very interesting boss fights.
If you don’t want to do a 20man raid you can do veteran dungeons and adventures for small parties of 5. You can also experience dungeon-like content on your own by doing a Shiphand.
So those are our three recommendations: Final Fantasy XIV, Elder Scrolls Online and Wildstar. Try them out and let us know what you think. Until next time!
