Eve Online is a science-fiction MMORPG set in space and is player driven; the world is immense with over 7,800 star systems to visit which contain various moons, planets, stations, stars, wormholes, asteroid belts and more. The game was originally released in 2003 and currently has a subscription fee which be paid each month or in 3 month intervals.
Eve Online is set far into the future when Humans have begun to colonize the rest of the Milk Way galaxy; the expansion also led to competition over resources and to conflicts. When the discovery of a natural wormhole was made, everything changed. It led to a new unexplored galaxy which was dubbed “New Eden” and allowed Humanity to build the EVE gate as they founded colonies in the new galaxy; the wormhole collapsed and left the humans in the new galaxy disconnected from the other galaxy and ultimately, each other also. Many of the colonies did not survive however five societies managed to and each eventually grew into interstellar spaceflight-capable civilizations. The game is set during this time and these societies are the five main factions in Eve Online.
There are four playable races to choose from and each of the races is split into three bloodlines with pre-set appearances; the player can modify their characters appearance also to further customize their character.
Eve Online is run on a single game world for each main server which players will connect to depending on their rejoin. Instead of starting a new ‘realm’ the developer adds more content to the game to further expand the world.
The majority of the game takes place from a spaceship and the combat does also; players can manually control their ship as they travel through space. Combat takes place at real-time and at high speeds using the weapons on the ship, including guns. There are also weapons that prevent targets from escaping, these disable the other ships warp drive which forces the ship to stay and fight or try to lose their attacker somehow. Players cannot actively aim with weapons, the weapon will lock onto an opponent and then the player will order it to fire which will deal damage based on various factors including range and velocity.
Eve Online is heavily recommended for science-fiction fans and for players looking for a MMO unlike the standard fantasy based ones. It’s great for solo players and offers a lot of content for them, it’s also good for social MMO players.
