The Elder Scrolls Online is set in the popular The Elder Scrolls universe and was originally released with an active subscription model and also required players to buy the game; in 2015 this was changed and the subscription fee was removed. Players can still opt into a subscription for the game to get extra features and unique cosmetic items. Following the change with the subscription model, the game was renamed to The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited.
Like with all other games in The Elder Scrolls franchise, this MMORPG is set on the continent of Tamriel and has a storyline that connects to the other games in the franchise.
The Elder Scrolls Online takes place 1000 years before the events of Skyrim and roughly around 800 years before the Morrowind and Oblivion games; the game is set in a time of huge conflict where the Daedric Prince Molag Bal is attempting to merge the mortal plane with his realm, Coldharbour. At the same time, the three alliances of mortal races are at war with each other as they all fight for the vacant imperial throne. The various races in the series are split into the three alliances and the player is placed into whichever alliance their chosen class is from unless the player has bought the Imperial Edition of the game; this edition gives the player the ability to play for any faction with any race and also allows them to play the otherwise locked Imperial race. The Explorers pack in the Crown Store also gives players this extra bonus.
The majority of Tamriel is available to explore however most zones are based on factions and some are only accessible by purchasing them; the majority of zones are free and can be unlocked by reaching a certain level. Players can play through their Alliance storyline if they wish and are not forced to do so, likewise with the Molag Bal storyline. There are also various other storylines currently in the game and more are being added including faction storylines from the main games such as the Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood and the Mages Guilds.
There is plenty of customization available to players in The Elder Scrolls Online; character creation is detailed with many sliders for options and there are 9 unlocked races for players to choose from and the final race, the Imperials, can be unlocked by paying for them. Players can chose from four main classes and each one has three unique skill lines; in addition to these skill lines there are also ones for weapon type, armor type, guild, PvP and racial types. There are also mutually exclusive lines for vampire and werewolf players too.
Combat is fast paced and is a very similar style to the main games in The Elder Scrolls franchise; players can attack and defend with their weapons and use their skills in combat also. Using a stealth approach to fighting is also possible and stealth is used in stealing also. The PvP area is unlocked once the player reaches a certain level, players in this zone fight to control the most forts for their faction with melee combat and also special PvP weapons such as trebuchets. There is plenty of group content for friends such as dungeons and also guilds. Guilds also have an opportunity to seat on of their members on the Imperial Throne if they control enough area in the PvP mode.
The Elder Scrolls Online is highly recommended for fans of the The Elder Scrolls franchise however even players who have never played the series before will still enjoy the game. Social players will love the guilds here and the potential to fight for the throne in PvP; solo players will also find the world is full of content for them and that the PvP mode is still fun even if playing it solo.
